Nano vs Micro vs Macro Influencers: What's the Difference?

Updated 1 September 2026

Creators are often grouped by audience size into nano, micro, macro, and mega tiers. The tiers matter because engagement — the share of an audience that actually reacts — tends to move in the opposite direction to reach. Here's what each tier means and when to use it.

The tiers, roughly

  • Nano: around 1,000 to 10,000 followers.
  • Micro: around 10,000 to 50,000 followers.
  • Mid-tier: around 50,000 to 250,000 followers.
  • Macro: around 250,000 to 1 million followers.
  • Mega / celebrity: 1 million+ followers.

The engagement trade-off

As accounts get bigger, the percentage of the audience that engages usually falls. Smaller creators tend to have tighter, more trusting communities. According to HypeAuditor (2025), nano-creators on Instagram average around 1.78% engagement, versus roughly 0.33% for accounts with over a million followers — a large gap in favour of the smaller tier.

When to use each tier

  • Nano and micro: trust, authenticity, niche targeting, and cost-efficiency. Great for conversions and community.
  • Mid and macro: broader reach with still-reasonable engagement. Good for awareness with some credibility.
  • Mega: mass reach and brand-name association, at the highest cost and usually the lowest engagement rate.

Why brands increasingly mix tiers

A common approach is to combine a few larger creators for reach with many nano and micro creators for trust and conversions. For most performance-focused campaigns in India, the smaller tiers do a lot of the heavy lifting.
